50th Birthday Walk Raises Funds For ISF (June 2011)

Our thanks go to one of our supporters, Andrew Broomhead, who celebrated his 50th Birthday in June by completing the “3 Peaks Challenge” in the United Kingdom and used his achievement to raise funds for ISF’s children. Here’s a report on Andrew’s accomplishment.

What did he do?

Between Saturday 11 June and Sunday 12 June Andrew climbed three of United Kingdom’s major Peaks:

• Ben Nevis near Fort William in Scotland, (from 20m to 1,344m).

• Scafell Pike near Seathwaite in England (from 70m to 977m).

• Snowdon near Llanberis in Wales (from 359m to 1067m).

In total:
• 3,000 vertical meters of climbing (and then descending) and 480 miles of driving
• Completed in 25:29 hours – equivalent to 23:59 hours after adjusting for new regulations of driver rest times!
• Within the target time of 24 hours!!

How does he feel?

A sense of achievement as only 7 of the 33 completed the challenge within the target time of 24 hours (adjusted). I did so with sore knees and 1 minute to spare! The luck of the weather played its role in beating the target as did our group’s ability to work as a team. I am impressed at the number of people on the mountains trying to do the same thing for their chosen charities. A good night’s sleep is expected as I bring this to a close!

How is the fundraising going?

There has been a fantastic desire to help the ISF children in Phnom Penh. Andrew thanks each of his sponsors who have contributed to date, amounting to:
GBP 23,500 /USD 37,500
Now he is aiming for another 20%!

Can you still make a donation?

Absolutely; and If you still interested to help here are 3 ways all of which seem to be popular:
1. www.justgiving.com/Andrew-Broomhead – this automatically attracts gift aid in the UK;
2. www.indochinastarfish.org/donation – mention “3 peaks climb – Andrew Broomhead” ;or
3. Cheque for “Indochina Starfish Foundation” sent to me to handle for which I can arrange an official charity receipt for tax offset.
