Parents attending class
February 2010 saw the expansion of our work to help the Stung Meanchey community. Realising that we would get better results with the children if we could assist the whole family, we commenced a pilot Adult Literacy Programme which we offered to the parents of the children attending our school.
There were initially 21 people (16 female and 5 male) registered to participate but only 11 actually commenced the course on 20 February. As the families ISF works with, tend to live day to day, what they earn on a particular day determines whether or not they can feed their family that day.

Due to this fact, work commitments caused a number of participants to drop out of the programme. ISF put in place an ‘earn as you learn’ opportunity for the parents, which allows them to produce paper jewellery which ISF purchases from them and on sells to the international market, through the school contacts we have in Singapore and the UK. The parents receive 100% of the cost price immediately upon selling the product to us and 100% profit of the product on completion of the literacy course. ISF does not financially benefit from this programme but by providing the parents an opportunity to earn some income while studying and guaranteeing an extra lump sum upon completion of the course, it has ensured that the number of participants has stabilised.
The pilot will run until the end of 2010 after which time it will be assessed and if successful, will be integrated as a full time ISF programme
